Katrina from The Oil Adventure is my essential oils guru! I find essential oils really interesting and I want to know how they work and the benefits they have. This blog answers all of those questions. Enjoy!
Where did your love start for essential oils?
I was introduced to essential oils by a friend. She had made some Peppermint Bliss balls and I washed it down with some Lemon in my water. I didn’t know much about essential oils at the time and so my journey began with Peppermint and Lemon Essential Oils.
I was hooked after making my first batch of Peppermint bliss balls (okay – maybe it was 3 batches) and loved my lemon water at work. I started to research the oils and what they could be used for (pretty much everything!) and ordered a Home Essentials Kit. There was a promotion on at the time so I was also able to get a free Salubelle #winning. The Home Essentials Kit comes with the top ten most versatile oils and a petal diffuser. The top ten oils are Lemon, Peppermint, On Guard, Digestzen, Ice Blue, Easy Air, Oregano, Tea Tree, Frankincense and Lavender – which I’ll dive into more detail further on.
As a young family with one baby we were using the oils for sleep, tummy issues, immunity, teething, low tox cleaning and overall wellness. We couldn’t believe how much they were working and neither could our friends and family. Not to mention the savings on not having to go to a doctor and easy DIY recipes for cleaning and nappy wipes!
The essential oils still amaze me today!
What are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds. These compounds can be found in the bark, stems, seeds, flowers, roots, petals, and other parts of plants.
Essential oils give plants their distinctive smells, essential oils protect plants and play a role in plant pollination. In addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and their beautiful fragrance, essential oils have been used throughout history in many cultures for their many benefits.
dōTERRA essential oils represent the safest, purest and most beneficial essential oils available today. They are gently and skillfully distilled from plants that have been patiently harvested by experienced growers from around the world for ideal extract composition and efficacy.
What are the different ways you can use essential oils?
There are three ways you can use essential oils.
AROMATICALLY – through your sense of smell! Essential oils are quickly absorbed by the smell receptors that can elicit powerful physiologic, mental, and emotional responses.
Diffusion is one of the simplest methods for using essential oils aromatically.
We currently have three diffusers in our house and use them all the time. A few examples we use are:
Citrus Bliss, Elevation, Wild Orange, Bergamot – if we feel deflated we will diffuse one or a mixture of these oils to help boost and uplift our happiness and overall wellness.
Lavender, Lavender Peace, Balance, Easy Air, Vetiver – For night time. These oils have calming and relaxing qualities which help promote a deeper and longer sleep.
Don’t have a diffuser? Here are few quick simple ways to still enjoy the benefits:
Put 1 drop of oil in your hands, rub together and inhale.
Put a few drops on a cotton ball and place around the house.
In a spray bottle, mix essential oils and water and spray the house.
TOPICALLY – Applying straight to your skin! Essential oils have a natural molecular composition which means they are easily absorbed by the skin and can be safely applied topically.
You can also increase absorption into the skin by using a carrier oil. This means you use less essential oils which is a win for me as the bottle will last longer!
My favourite carrier oil is fractionated coconut oil – this is because all the fatty acids are removed, it’s non-greasy and remains in a liquid form.
A few ways to apply topically would be through massages, making your own roller blends and even having a nice relaxing bath by mixing the essential oils into some Epsom bath salts.
INTERNALLY - Certain essential oils have a rich culinary history and can be used as dietary supplements supporting a variety of healthy conditions. When ingested, essential oils directly enter the blood stream via the gastrointestinal tract, where they are transported throughout the rest of the body.
A few ways to ingest essential oils are:
Drink it in your water – Lemon, Wild Orange and Lime are just some examples.
Have head tension? Apply Frankincense to your thumb and press on the roof of your mouth for up to 10 seconds.
Veggie Caps – This is a great way to ingest oils for cellular health, immunity and tummy issues.
Cooking – use a toothpick to swirl essential oils into your pasta dishes, sauces, roasts etc
What can they be used for?
Too many to list! But I’ll quickly go through what the top ten can be used for:
Are they safe for children?
As a parent myself, I have loved having an alternative way to help my child when they are in pain or not feeling well. But I do understand that some parents may be nervous about trying essential oils on their babies. After seeing our results and hearing other successful stories, I can tell you that dōTERRA’s essential oils can be wonderful for our children. You can diffuse them in your home and you can also apply them topically. Just remember to start off with smaller number of drops (you can find dilution charts on Pinterest) and of course – use a carrier oil! This will help carry the oil further over their skin and help with any skin sensitivity. You will save on money too #hellyeah!
What blends do you recommend for people with anxiety or someone who is stressed?
I love using oils from the Mood Management Kit! Let me tell you why:
Lavender Peace is known as the restful blend! How nice does that sound! This has a combination of powerful oils that helps relax the mind and helps you unwind. It also helps eliminate feelings of stress, anxiousness and being overwhelmed.
Balance is the grounding blend. Do you have an overactive mind? Or kids that are overactive? Balance is great for this! It also helps you stay focussed on your goals and dreams by helping you feel connected and committed. I love this oil as it helps support any anxious feelings especially before bed!
Citrus Bliss is known as the invigorating blend. It is literally happiness in a bottle! This blend has energising and refreshing properties that can help reduce stress and uplift your mood.
Elevation is the joyful blend. This blend provides an invigorating combination of essential oils that can elevate your mood and increase your energy – what isn’t to love!
